Six years ago photographer Ben Thouard moved to Tahiti and has been capturing its beauty and essence ever since. Thouard shoots everything from the heaviest surf, bodyboard, standup, and windsurf sessions to intimate encounters with whales and sharks to on-land adventures. With a keen eye for color and light, Ben’s photos show why Tahiti is among the premier destinations on Earth for the aquatic adventurer. There are few places in the world that offer a better all-inclusive environment for the ocean lover. Its lush green coastlines, ample wave energy, and hundreds of perfectly shaped reef passes make Tahiti and its surrounding islands a surfer’s dream with breaks ranging from beginner-friendly to double-black-diamond “expert only.” Divers travel to the crystal clear waters of Tahiti from every corner of the world to marvel at whales, sharks, brilliantly colored species of reef fish, and healthy reef systems. Every year in Tahiti is a good year, but as you can plainly see through Ben’s lens, 2013 offered up an incredible feast of beauty, excitement, and amazing moments.

“Financially, 2103 was a pretty tough year for photographers. But when I watch this slideshow [below] and remember all these beautiful moments, I smile and think, ‘Maybe it wasn’t such a bad year after all,’” laughs Thouard.

Thouard, who started shooting photos nine years ago, made the move to Tahiti after only a few visits. “For a photographer, Tahiti has so much to offer. The water is extremely clear and the landscapes are phenomenal. The light is constantly changing in interesting ways as well,” says Ben. “Just look at the contrast between the turquoise flat water of the lagoons and the bold bright colors of the mountains that go straight up from the water—it’s like a dream that becomes reality every time you look around.”

Now that the lure of Tahiti has Thouard firmly in its grasps, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon, and you can bet that his photos from 2014 are going to only get better. “I’m excited about the new year. I plan on spending a lot of time in the water and working on new projects,” he says. “Mostly, I just want to show the people of the world how beautiful Tahiti is, and hopefully inspire them to come see it for themselves!”

With the new year off and running and most of us back at work, it’s a perfect time to set aside five minutes of your day to take a little trip to Tahiti through the lens of Ben Thouard—consider it a five-minute vacation. Go ahead and go full screen with this slide show, turn up the music, and get lost in your own little cyber-Tahiti adventure. Au revoir
