Well what a start we've already had! From extremely questionable refereeing calls (coming from my experience as a ref) and absolutely hilarious dives/flops, it has been full of emotions. As I write this Mexico just scored, this time it counts.
I was going to do team profiles but my good friend Anders Peterson, has made a lovely blog with all the team profiles at http://coppadelmondo.wordpress.com/ so follow his work there. He will be covering the world cup as well.
Now on to the exciting game of the day: Spain vs Netherlands, the rematch of the 2010 world cup final. Although Mark Van Bommel is gone, Nigel De Jong is still here to resume his battle with xabi alonso... if you dont remember their battle ..
Anyway, the player to replace van bommel in the middle was supposed to be Kevin Strootman, after stellar performances in qualifying. He, unfortunately, is injured for the world cup due to a knee problem.
However, when injuries occur as I said before, there is opportunity to see rising stars, and I feel Georginio Wijnaldum will have plenty to play in this world cup.
Now for Spain, nearly their whole team is known all over the international stage, except for one: Diego Costa. The former Athletico Madrid striker (well his Chelsea deal is almost done) chose to play for Spain over Brazil, finally adding some devastating striking power (no disrespect to Torres, and Villa is getting old) to the Spanish side, so they wont have play with Fabregas as a false 9.
As a dutch supporter, he is the biggest threat as our defenders have probably never played against him before, in addition to the fact that the Netherlands has a fairly young defense.
Well anyway almost an hour until the game. Mexico is still winning but Cameroon is pushing. 5 minutes left..
For now, HUP HOLLAND HUP!!
