Grand Canyon Awesomness!!

by Martina Wegman

I was extremely lucky to be invited by Shilo Gibson for a Grand Canyon trip!
Straight after the WWGP I took a flight into Flagstaff where I met up with Louise Jull, who was going to hike in with me for the ten day mission. The trip was organized and leaded by Luc Strickland and included sixteen people, four rafts and four kayaks.

After a mission to find a paddle in Flagstaff and four hours sleep, Lou and I woke up early and started our drive to the South Rim of the Canyon. Arriving in the early morning at the rim it was freezing cold! We started our hike down the Bright Angel Trial at 7 am and found ourselves three hours later deep into the canyon next to the Colorado River.

We were impressed by the hike and the beauty of the Canyon and where excited to hit the water and explore the rest. We got told that today was the day with the hardest and most rapids of the canyon. Our first day we hiked ten miles and some 5,000 feed elevation and paddled about thirty miles before we hit camp.

After all the people I had spoken with beforehand, I must attmid that I had expected a tiny bit more of the Canyon after the first two days.

Waking up during the second night underneath the start with the moon shining on the Canyon walls, made me realize that I was in an awesome place. It changed my perspective that night.

After a couple of days floating with Lulu in our kayaks we decided to jump onto the raft and give the oar rowing a try. Since then I barely got back into my kayak, as I loved hanging out on the raft! For me the trip got amazing after I swapped kayak for hanging in the raft with Kent and his ladies. Experiencing some stout upstream breeze and getting stuck in eddies for more than thirty minutes with five people on the oars trying to fight the breeze! ;-)

The coolest part of the trip was to get to know the crew better and each day I enjoyed the canyon more and more. The people on the trip where super rad and made this trip amazing!

We had two layover days and did a couple of crazy hikes. Every night we had a dinner party and a couple of themed costume parties with the best being ‘Merica day and prom night on the last night of the trip!

The ten days went by super quick and arriving at the take out I was super super stoked on this experience! It was great being off the grid with no cell phone reception or media, being surrounded by an epic crew.

Thanks a lot Luc and Shilo for getting us on this trip and everybody else for being super awesome and making this trip unforgetable.
